How To Master Candlestick Patterns

By Mark Deaton

Japanese candlesticks are basically an ancient tradition of the Chinese for keeping tabs on the rice markets. Considered by many (safe to say at this point.) to be the best way to view an asses price action. Japanese candlestick have become popular in just about every liquid market.

Candlestick charts show a trend just like any other chart but with more detail. They use a value system of open, high, low and close. There are 2 basic parts to a candlestick; the body, that is a rectangle shape either filled or hollow, and the shadows that are simply lines above and below the body.

A high is marked by the top of the upper shadow or a wick. It indicates the highest point of the day in trading. The low is marked by the bottom of the lower shadow. If a security closes higher than it opened, then a hollow body is drawn. The top line of the body itself would indicate the close and the bottom line of the body would indicate the open. If a security closes lower than the opening price, then a filled body is drawn with the top line indicating the opening and the lower one indicating the close. (See below.)

Candlestick charts are considered more eye appealing and easier to understand than the ordinary bar or line chart. They are more intuitive and easier to identify immediately, and they also show price action relative to the past. (Best left for another article.)

There are different sizes of bodies as well. A long hollow body indicates there was a large advance in pricing between the open and close. A long filled body indicates the closing price was much lower than the opening. In return and in keeping with the same analogy, a short hollow body would indicate a small rise in pricing between open and close and a short filled body would indicate a small drop in pricing between open and close.

Another characteristic would be a hollow or filled body with no shadows. These are called Marubozu or black & white. A white Marubozu would occur when the open equals the low and the close equals the high. A black Marubozu would occur when the open equals the high and the close equals the low.

Another important candlestick pattern is a spinning top. Spinning tops are represented by a long or short shadow / wick and a short real body. The short body tells us that there was a small gap between the open and close. If the shadow or wick is long it tells us that the highs and lows of the day moved hard but failed to remain strong. Whichever was long tells you of potential upcoming underlying strength. - 23226

An Overview of Managing Risks in Investments

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

Any investment carries with it a certain amount of risks. Risks are completely unavoidable and could get the best out of any investor (especially the beginners) if not managed and handled properly. Risks should not be feared rather it should be faced with a knowing attitude and courage. Risks should not stop anyone from investing and ultimately- for achieving financial freedom.

Trading Stocks has risks that lie on several factors. There is no guarantee if you will have a capital gain since the market is always fluctuating. The more you traded, the higher the risks of losing that investment. This is the reason behind why most people do not trade huge stocks when theyre just beginning and opt for smaller/ cheaper ones.

This article is written to explain how to manage risks in investments. First is to find an investment portfolio with a value you are comfortable with. This is so you can offset from the place where your investment looks like it will collapse. Also, never invest all your money on one area, as you have the chances of losing all of it. It is unwise either to invest small amounts on many investment vehicles, because small amounts are equal to little gains. Try to focus your investments to a minimum, putting an ample amount of value in it. In this way, you can enjoy valuable capital gains once it became agreeable.

Another way to manage risks in investing is to start investing in your early years. This way, you can have a lot of time to recover from your losses if ever there are any. Never wait until you are very old to invest and putting all of your lifes savings at that as well, you may predict what may happen. There are special cases though of people who started investing (or putting up a business) who succeeded like Col. Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

These are just some of the ways on how to manage risks. Always remember that a risk is worth taking if you have a dream that goes with it. - 23226

Debt Can Be Good With A 1031 Exchange

By Kevin Y. Delno

The basic premise behind a 1031 exchange is that that you, the taxpayer, are shifting all of your equity from one property to the next. In effect, the old debt is being offset by the new debt on the replacement property. However, there are two ways to usurp this premise and cash out some of your equity: pre-exchange refinancing, and post-exchange refinancing. Pre-exchange financing will be discussed first.

1031 rationale requires all of the proceeds from the sale to pass to the Qualified Intermediary. This prevents you from receiving any cash benefit from the sale. There may be times, however, when you would like to use some of your equity for your own entertainment or investments. If you decide to refinance your property shortly before the 1031 exchange and use that equity for your own entertainment, you may run afoul of the IRS.

We have tax case IRS versus Garcia which tells us that the refinance must be done well prior to the 1031 Exchange. Garcia tried to avoid taxes and ran afoul of the 1031 rationale and the IRS. He ran into problems because he refinanced just before the 1031 Exchange and tried to take proceeds without paying the taxes. Therefore, you can't take out equity unless you pay taxes on it.

The other way of recovering funds via refinancing is the Post 1031 Exchange Finance on the replacement property. This is a good way for you to take some of that equity out of the replacement property and buy more real estate. There is a question, however, on how long you have to wait before the refinancing after the 1031 Exchange is completed.

There is debate on how long one must wait after the 1031 exchange to show the IRS, through the closing statement, that you have invested all of your equity into the replacement property. Some say wait a nanosecond to establish a separate transaction and a new settlement statement to show that the replacement property was encumbered with new debt via a loan or a mortgage. Once this is established, there is a cash payment from the lender to you. Essentially, you have tapped into a pool of money made available through the 1031 exchange.

There are risks in the nanosecond interpretation since there is no definitive IRS rule regarding how long you have to keep the equity in the replacement property. In order to avoid the Garcia trap, or a negative ruling from the IRS, it is deemed prudent to keep the equity in the replacement property until the following tax year, or until two years have passed from the 1031 exchange to the ultimate refinance. - 23226

Think About Trading Forex Options

By Hass67

Have you heard about George Soros; The legendary manager of Quantum Hedge Fund who had made a cool $1 Billion profit from a single bet. In the early 1990s, one day he was sitting in his office discussing currency markets with his associate. Both of them were of the opinion that the British pound was overpriced and Bank of England could not sustain its price for long.

Acting on his hunch, he told his associate to purchase $10 Billion put and call options on British Pound and German Mark. It was a huge bet. He was in fact swaggering all the assets under his control on a single bet that may or may not pay off.

His knowledge of the currency markets was perfect. He was sure that his conviction that the Bank of England cannot sustain the overpriced British pound would come off right. Soon other currency speculators also joined. A huge selling pressure on British pound developed. Bank of England could not sustain the selling pressure too long and in a matter of 24 hours had to take British pound out of the European Monetary System and let it float freely.

British pound plummeted in the currency markets. George Soros had won his bet. He became famous as the man who broke the British pound with his pictures in all the famous newspapers and magazines.

Daily more than $3 trillion are transacted in the currency markets. You as a forex trader can profit from the volatility in the currency markets using a number of methods. Forex options is one of the methods

As a retail forex trader you can trade any of these contracts: spot, futures and options. Forwards and swaps are two contracts that are also traded in the forex interbank market between large institutions like banks, corporations and hedge funds.

Options are derivative contracts that let you buy or sell an underlying asset at a price called exercise price before a certain date known as the strike date. Unlike futures, you dont have the obligation to actually buy/sell the currency.

In case of a forex options the underlying asset is the currency. Now, forex options give you the right to purchase/sell a certain amount of a particular currency on payment of a premium.

How do you profit from forex options? When the currency price is above/below the strike price, you can exercise your option to buy/sell that currency by buying/selling the currency at the strike price. The difference between the strike price and the currency market price is your profit.

If the currency market price is below/above the strike price of the forex options contract that you had purchased by paying a small premium; you can simply let the options contract expire. You only lose the premium.

There is a very good forex options strategy that lets you profit from the currency markets in whatever direction it is moving. You can profit regardless of the direction of the market.

This is a risk free method but it only guarantees 30-50% ROI. If you are satisfied with this much sure shot return you can try this method. - 23226
