When To Use Fixed Income Investments

By Amy Nutt

Whether one is living in difficult or robust economic times, it is always important to have an investment strategy that includes relatively safe investments. One form of investment is known as Fixed Income Investments.

Fixed income investment refers to any type of investment that generates an average return. Investors loan their money to a government body, corporation, or financial institution and receive interest on a regular basis. Although the rate of return may not be high, there is comfort knowing the risk is minimal. If a person is seeking to invest their money where there is not a high risk, fixed income investments are usually the solution.

The term fixed-income investment include such investments as bank notes, mutual funds, mortgage backed securities, retirement investments such as GICs, T-Bills, as well as government and corporate bonds, and other forms of securities. While the principal and return are not fail-safe, these fixed-income funds offer the chance for a higher return. They are popular for those planning on retiring in the near future.

GICs are a popular choice as a fixed income investment. The interest and principal are insured to a certain degree so your money is for the most part protected. Fixed-income mutual funds are a good choice for wary investors as they provide the opportunity to predict income over a set period of time. This is handy for budgeting purposes, so people can plan for retirement.

Many prudent investors acquire bonds as a fixed income investment. They generally pay out twice a year or on a monthly basis. Bonds are a tax-free investment income. Such bonds can be federal, state, or local municipality bonds.

Certificates of Deposit allow people to earn interest on their investment without any real risk of loss. It is much like putting money in an insured bank investment for a fixed period of time. It will earn a preset interest rate for a fixed time period. After the time expires, the certificate matures and the investor can cash in the certificate. They will receive their initial investment plus any interest earned.

Savings Bonds pay a fixed interest rate that is delayed until the bond is redeemed or for 30 years. The rate is based on the interest rate at the time of purchase. The interest paid is adjusted for inflation.

If you are about to retire and are in need of an investment with low risk, fixed income solutions can be the right choice. Investment portfolios will benefit by having a safe and secure stock. By combining investments that are affected differently by economic events, investment risk is reduced. These investments are often chosen during periods of market instability. Fixed investments can fluctuate with market conditions. If you have to sell them prior to maturity, you will usually receive a penalty fee.

Fixed Income Investments are a sound choice for cautious investors and those seeking a safe investment for retirement. Most fixed-income investments also provide a foreseeable flow of income. This can be an advantage for those on a pension or social security. - 23226

Trading The Forex

By Jo Nash

FOREX trading is all about trading foreign currency, stocks, and similar type of products. The currency of one country is weighed against the currency of another country to determine value. The value of that foreign currency is taken into consideration when trading stocks on the FOREX markets. Most countries have control over the value of that countries value, involving the currency, or money. Those who are often involved in the FOREX markets include banks, large businesses, governments, and financial institutions.

What makes the FOREX market different from the stock market? A forex market trade is one that involves at least two countries, and it can take place worldwide. The two countries are one, with the investor, and two, the country the money is being invested in. Most all transactions taking place in the FOREX market are going to take place through a broker, such as a bank.

What really makes up the FOREX markets? The foreign exchange market is made up of a variety of transactions and counties. Those involved in the FOREX market are trading in large volumes, large amounts of money. Those who are involved in the FOREX market are generally involved in cash businesses, or in the trade of very liquid assets that you can sell and buy fast. The market is large, very large. You could consider the FOREX market to be much larger than the stock market in any one country overall. Those involved in the FOREX market are trading daily twenty-four hours a day and sometimes trading is completed on the weekend, but not all weekends.

You might be surprised at the number of people that are involved in FOREX trading. In the years 2004, almost two trillion dollars was an average daily trading volume. This is a huge number for the number of daily transactions to take place. Think about how much a trillion dollars really is and then times that by two, and this is the money that is changing hands every day!

The FOREX trading market is not something new, but has been used for over thirty years. With the introduction of computers, and then the internet, the trading on the FOREX market continues to grow as more and more people and businesses alike become aware of the availablily of this trading market. FOREX only accounts for about ten percent of the total trading from country to country, but as the popularity in this market continues to grow so could that number. - 23226

Specialize In Trading US Dollar (Part II)

By Ahmad Hassam

Suppose you have the data and calculated the currency correlations of the major pairs. The correlation between GBP/USD and EUR/USD is 0.68. This correlation coefficient means both the pairs move in the same direction 68% of the time.

USD/CHF and EUR/USD have a correlation coefficient of -0.975 and is pretty close to minus one. The negative correlation coefficient means both USD/CHF and EUR/USD pairs move in the opposite direction almost 97.5% of the time. In other words, if USD/CHF moves up, the pair EUR/USD will move down!

You have this information about the recent correlation coefficients. It tells you how much these pairs move in the same direction or opposite direction. Suppose you trade both the currency pairs USD/CHF and EUR/USD by going long. What you will be doing by going long on both the positively correlated pairs is in fact canceling both the long positions.

If you win on USD/CHF pair, you will lose on EUR/USD pair. Due to the negative correlation between the two pairs, the two trades would effectively cancel each other. A savvy investor would go long on USD/CHF. At the same time he/she will go short on EUR/USD. So he/she will be shorting USD in both the trades and diversifying the USD bearish investment.

You can make entry and exit decisions for each trade based on currency correlations. Suppose GBP/USD starts showing volatility. It approaches a resistance level. You plan on going long on a breakout.

However, you notice on the charts that the other three pairs are not moving as much as the GBP/USD. EUR/USD is not moving up on the chart. USD/CHF is not moving down on the chart. USD/JPY is not moving down on the chart. This means that the move in GBP/USD is solely pound driven. The move maybe related to some news in the British economy.

You know now that the move in GBP/USD pair is GBP driven. The move is not US Dollar driven. You have isolated the cause of movement in GBP/USD pair and can take advantage of this information. Ignore the GBP driven move. Dont enter into any trade. Wait for a later opportunity. An opportunity that involves simultaneous correlated moves of all the major pairs!

Lets take another example. Suppose you have taken a short position on EUR/USD pair. You want to be sure whether the pair will proceed down towards your profit target. You also want to know can it go against you and cause you to exit the trade with a small loss.

Your EUR/USD is heading towards M1 level after having broken the S1 support pivot level. You should take a look at the pair EUR/GBP. You find that it has paused at its S1 support pivot level. It is showing signs of reversing to the upside.

Knowledge of currency correlations can tell you if EUR/GBP breaks through the S1 level, you are poised for a profitable trade in this type of a situation, However, you should watch the indicators and exit before taking a big loss if it reverses and heads back to the upside. You might consider trading a basket of all the major currencies as you mature in forex trading. - 23226

Evaluating Stock Market News Sources

By Michael Swanson

For years, if you wanted to know anything about the stock market, you turned to the Wall Street Journal. Today investors turn to many other sources for stock market news.

Of course, the Wall Street Journal is still published every business day. It is very comprehensive in its coverage of the stock market. It has every stock listed on the American stock exchanges as well as many of the foreign exchanges. Additionally, many daily newspapers will carry listings for stocks when the market is open.

News on the market can be found on radio and cable television. Many of the news channels will show a ticker of the market several times daily, until they show the final for the day. In addition, you will find shows that are dedicated to money and market news.

If you need immediate news on the market at your fingertips, turn to the internet. The internet gives you information about the market that is just like being on Wall Street. Prices are updated instantaneously. In addition to the American markets, you can also follow international markets.

If you have no money invested in the stock market, you may wonder what the big deal is about the market. Before you turn off the news, you better back up and think. Do you have money invested in an IRA or a 401k. Many times these programs as well as many others are directly linked to the stock exchange.

Persons who have lost their jobs in the current economy and been forced to remove the cash that remained in the 401k will find that the amount in this retirement fund today is much less that was in the fund two years ago. That is because your money was invested in the stock market. When the economy went south, so did your money.

Knowing stock market news lets you keep an eye on your investments. - 23226
